Cocoa Horizons
Van Delft Chocolates & Bakery believes in making a meaningful impact on the lives of cocoa farmers and their communities.
Objective
The goal of Cocoa Horizons is to improve the livelihoods of cocoa farmers and their communities by promoting sustainable, entrepreneurial farming, boosting productivity, and supporting community development in ways that protect both nature and children.
Challenges Faced
Cocoa is often grown by small-scale farmers in remote equatorial regions—primarily West Africa—where sustainability challenges are common, including limited knowledge of good agricultural practices, ageing farms, exhausted soils, unpredictable climate impacts, and lack of investment capital.
Many cocoa-growing communities lack basic infrastructure such as schools, vocational training, clean water, and healthcare.
Gender inequality adds further strain, with women struggling to build skills and earn income.
Ongoing Improvement and Support
Through Cocoa Horizons, farm-level data is collected to identify each farmer’s unique needs. Customised business plans are then developed to raise incomes and measure the impact of initiatives funded by the Cocoa Horizons Foundation.
The results are reviewed annually to refine the methodology and ensure it supports self-sustaining, environmentally-friendly farming communities. If targets aren’t met, the approach is adapted accordingly to meet goals for productivity, environmental sustainability, and community welfare.
